Étang de Guizengeard: a turquoise jewel in the heart of Charente

Located in southern Charente, near Brossac, theÉtang de Guizengeard is the spectacular result of the conversion of a former kaolin quarry. Exploited between 1975 and 2013 for its white clay used in the manufacture of porcelain, tiles and cosmetics, the site was gradually abandoned, giving way to a reborn nature. The deep excavations, up to 40 meters deep, have filled with rainwater, forming lakes of turquoise and azure hues, due to the absence of aquatic life and the purity of the water .

An immersive hike in the heart of the forest

The site offers a 3-kilometer hiking loop, accessible to all levels of walker. The trail winds through the Double saintongeaise forest, composed mainly of pine, chestnut and oak trees. There are two main routes to the lakes: the Grand Bois du Marais circuit and the Guêpiers circuit. Along the way, information panels explain the geological history of the site, its conversion and local biodiversity.

The recommended starting point is the parking lot of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Guizengeard, a former Templar chapel dating back to the 12th century, and home to the oldest bell in Charente, dated 1495.

Preserving a fragile ecosystem

Classified as an arrêté préfectoral de protection de biotope since June 4, 2021, the site is subject to strict rules to preserve its unique biodiversity.

No swimming or water sports allowed
Keep off the marked trails
Ban on fires, camping and drone flights
Dogs must be kept on a leash
Maintain silence to avoid disturbing wildlife

These measures aim to protect the rare species present on the site, such as the European bee-eater, the genet, the roe deer and various species of dragonflies and birds.
