Brantôme en Périgord: the pearl of Périgord Vert
An island city
with unique charm
Nicknamed the Venice of Périgord, Brantôme en Périgord is a picturesque commune located in the Dordogne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The town is built on an island formed by a meander of the River Dronne, offering a peaceful, bucolic setting in which to stroll. Its medieval architecture, cobbled streets and ancient bridges give Brantôme a timeless atmosphere.
TREASURES OF HISTORY AND ART THROUGH THE AGES
A remarkable historical and cultural heritage
Saint-Pierre de Brantôme Abbey, founded in 769 by Charlemagne, is the town’s jewel. It houses one of France’s oldest bell towers, dating back to the 11th century. Behind the abbey, an impressive troglodyte complex is revealed, including the grotto of the Last Judgement, adorned with enigmatic bas-reliefs, and the Saint-Sicaire fountain, renowned for its miraculous virtues.
The bent bridge, built in the 13th century, is another emblematic feature of Brantôme. This medieval bridge spans the Dronne with a singular curvature, once allowing monks access to the gardens on the opposite bank.
Other sites of interest include the Fernand Desmoulin museum, dedicated to the Périgord artist, and the Peyrelevade dolmen, a Neolithic vestige classified as a historic monument.

Brantôme is a dynamic town offering a wide range of cultural and festive events throughout the year. The Brantôme carnival, listed as an intangible cultural heritage site, is a local tradition celebrated in March, highlighting Occitan culture. In summer, nautical jousting on the Dronne and the potters’ market attract many visitors.
The weekly Friday morning market is one of the most famous in Périgord. Local producers offer quality local produce such as foie gras, truffles, walnuts and cheeses.
