A religious heritage unique in Europe
Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is home to two remarkable religious buildings. Themonolithic Saint-Jean church, carved out of the rock in the 12th century, is the largest underground church in Europe. Its vaults are 20 meters high, and it contains a stone reliquary inspired by the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
Just a few steps away, theSaint-Jacques church impresses with its Saintongean Romanesque facade adorned with detailed carvings, including representations of the zodiac and agricultural scenes. This church was an important stopover on the route to Santiago de Compostela.

Near Aubeterre, the Château de Villebois-Lavalette dominates the village of the same name, offering a glimpse into the region’s medieval history. The Bonnes mill, a listed site, bears witness to traditional milling activity along the Dronne.
The region is also renowned for its local produce, notably cognac and Périgord walnuts, which have been awarded the AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) label.
