An exceptional historical heritage
Périgord boasts a concentration of historic sites that is unique in France, with over 1,000 castles, medieval bastides and numerous villages ranked among the most beautiful in the country.
Discover this exceptional heritage along the cobbled streets of Sarlat, the medieval jewel of Périgord, Périgueux and its Byzantine cathedral, Brantôme, the “Venice of Périgord”, nestled in a meander of the Dronne, or Bergerac, its historic center and prestigious vineyards.
In the Vézère valley, a detour to the Lascaux cave is a must if you want to step back in time to prehistoric times. A four-colour destination
The different regions of Périgord
The Dordogne department is traditionally divided into four territories known as the four Périgords. Each has its own specific identity and landscape.
Green Périgord
The Périgord Vert region, in the north of the Dordogne, is ideal for campers looking for peace and quiet, nature and authenticity. Forests, rivers, hedgerows and hills make up an ideal environment for nature lovers.
Towns and villages such as Brantôme, Nontron (the capital of Périgord Vert) and Bourdeilles are just waiting to be explored: stroll through their narrow streets, stroll through their markets and immerse yourself in their history.
It’s in this land of authenticity that our La Dordogne Verte campsite is set, on the banks of the Dronne, the “queen” river of the Périgord Vert, renowned for its bucolic landscapes, its mills and canoeing.
Black Périgord
Périgord Noir is the most touristic area of the Dordogne. It owes its name to its holm oak forests and rich historical heritage.
The medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda, the Dordogne valley and the Lascaux caves attract visitors from all over the world every year.
Purple Périgord
Périgord Pourpre stretches around Bergerac and its vineyards. This region is famous for its medieval bastides, vineyard landscapes and gastronomic specialties. Wine lovers will discover several renowned appellations.
The Périgord Blanc
The Périgord Blanc region around Périgueux is characterized by its limestone plateaus and open landscapes. The department’s capital, Périgueux, boasts a remarkable historic center and a cathedral listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
