A SOOTHING RIVER
IN THE HEART OF PÉRIGORD
The Dronne, its characteristics
The Dronne rises in the Périgord-Lumousin regional nature park, in the commune of Buissière-Galant, in the Cars-Châlus massif. Its watercourse forms the boundary between the departments of Haute Vienne, Dordogne, Charente and Gironde. It flows through a multitude of villages, including Bourdeilles, Tocane-Saint-Apre, Ribérac, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne and Saint-Aulaye…
Since the Middle Ages, the Dronne has been a formidable economic engine, with mills producing walnut oil and flour, then used for textile milling, paper mills and steel mills.
80% of its course is either classified as a Natura 2000 zone or as a Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest. You can come across many rare and protected species, such as the European mink and otter, the cistude, and many ornithological species, such as the European kingfisher.

Activities on the Dronne
Nowadays, you can canoe, fish and swim here, but you can also find many preserved sites to stroll around, or visit the repurposed mills that once made the region’s industrial reputation.
The Dronne is classified as 1st category upstream of Saint-Pardoux, then 2nd category. Sturgeons are still found here, but fishing is banned, although you can find caviar in Neuvic.
